Subaru steps up
by James Stanford
Cars Guide
24 June 2005
A bigger engine will give the new Subaru Impreza WRX even more punch. The controversial shape of the Impreza, which arrives in October, has caught the attention of fans, but the engines in the WRX and STi versions will also be worth talking about.
Both cars, which currently run 2.0-litre turbo engines, will step up to 2.5-litre units that offer more power and torque. No official output figures are available, but expect the STi's motor to push past 200kW.
The hot versions of the Impreza will run the larger engine, but it is yet to be decided whether the standard versions will.
Subaru Australia will not confirm the engine upgrade for the WRX and STi, but spokesman David Rowley says the company is always improving the cars.
"If you look at the track record of the entire Impreza range, each model year we have made significant upgrades in every aspect of the car," Rowley says. He says Subaru Australia is not worried by the negative reaction of many Cars Guide readers last week to spy photos of the Impreza featuring the new corporate nose.
"Those responses were based on unofficial pictures and the customer feedback from the publication of official images has been very positive," he says. "We are quietly confident about the way the new model will be perceived, especially when people see the new car in the metal."
