I originally had a 3" mandrel bend exhaust system, stainless plate off turbo, stainless pipe shaped to suit turbo to hi flow cat, mild steel through to a 3" resonator, under the diff to a 3" .muffler. The muffler was a problem. Whilst the system was exceptionally well made, it was way too noisy. The fitter had done WRX's before, and he was able to offer a reference, however I heard this car and said it was noisy, and wanted something much quieter.
We started with a 3" straight through, with 1 internal baffle. This made heaps of power, but was illegal at best. Deafening at worst. I then swapped for a 3' with heaps of baffles, this was at least legal, but the booming in the cabin was unbearable. Sort of a cross between a Kombi and a speedway car.
This is when I cried enough, and called MRT. Once the MRT item was installed the sound is almost stock, just deeper. Inside the cabin with the windows up you can't really tell that anything is different, open the windows and the throttle and it's obvious to those in the know. As for power differences, I really don't think I've lost much if any power. The car however is easier to drive with the MRT item, not needing as many revs to take off sedately.
I was so close to removing the 3" exhaust it wasn't .funny. I could have got my exhaust fitter to hand make something for me (he makes a lot of systems and mufflers for speedway cars) but I was having trouble getting him to understand I wanted QUIET. I wasn't ready to try something else out. This was the last attempt. NOW I'M STOKED.
I love the car again, and I love my exhaust. It took a while to get there, but it was worth all the heartache.
Thanks Brett and Sam,
Stu
