On our Way to Perth

In the final preparations for the Respect Yourself Forest Rally in Perth next weekend, (1st April) MRT have discovered a broken crown wheel in the gearbox of their Sanyo/Citibank Ready Credit Subaru Impreza.

"We had been focusing on the slight panel damage from our cars debut rally in Wyong two weeks ago; the car ran great on the second day, even with panel damage, so we didn’t invest time to do routine servicing until early this week!” Brett said.

We thought the rest of the car was pretty much OK, until we got around to changing the gearbox oil. We pulled the plug out, and there was half a dozen teeth sitting on top of the plug. We have the box out now, and have rushed in some airfreight parts as they are not available in Australia.

The team have been working every night for the last two weeks on preparation for the first round of the Australian Rally Championships in Perth.

We are all confident it will be OK, our guys have done gearbox rebuilds before, so we have all the Subaru tools to do it. Even if we have to hand carry the rebuilt box on the plane, the car can go with no gearbox, plus we have a spare one anyway if we are really stuck.

“I am very satisfied with our pace on the event at Gosford, we made some mistakes, but this event was for testing and our focus is the ARC and now Perth,” Brett said. The MRT crew will also contest the entire NSW State Rally Championship, following the announcement of a deal between the Series organisers and SBS to provide television coverage on SBS Speedweek and Fox Sports. This will see the Sydney based team entering over 11 events in less than 9 months!
