The 2001 ARC season is underway!
The weekend
has just played host to the Respect Yourself Forest Rally in WA.
While Motorsport News may have kindly suggested we were to be one of the privateer teams to watch we were in fact watching progress on the web while continuing preparations for our season start in the FIA Rally Of Canberra.
After two days throwing their respective rally cars around the ball bearing roads way out west, honours are even among the primary protagonists. Subaru's Possum Bourne had problems with his new Impreza (previously campaigned by Juha Kankkunen in the WRC) on Saturdays first leg leaving the door open for the Toyota Corolla of Neal Bates. Despite changes that saw him setting stunning stage times Bourne was only able to claw his way back up to second and Bates had a fine first up win. In Group N Cody Crocker came out firing and pulled out a lead on his former rally tutor Ed Ordynski, but a flat tyre scuppered his chances and the second factory Subaru had to settle for a second in class and fourth outright. Day two was to be a different story….
Possum Bourne was on the pace from the start. Pulling out a healthy lead over Bates who rates the rally as the cars weakest of the year. The result never looked in doubt and the win a piece means the pair head into the second round of the championship all square.
The Ordynski/Crocker battle became an epic on the Sunday, rarely more than a few seconds between them in overall time or individual stage times, with Cody Crocker, co-driver Greg Foletta and the Subaru Impreza WRX coming out on top. Until next week
